Transitioning out of incarceration, navigating court-ordered probation, or participating in a Veteran Treatment Court comes with strict legal requirements. For any Justice-Involved Veteran (JIV) returning to the community, one critical need stands above all others: having a safe, clean, and reliable place to live while rebuilding their life.

Without housing stability, fulfilling court obligations or avoiding recidivism becomes an uphill battle.

That is why the New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers (VIC) offers our Veterans Transition and Reentry Program—a structured, rule-based transitional housing environment designed to give Justice-Involved Veterans (JIV) in New Mexico the foundation they need to fulfill court obligations, rebuild their lives, and achieve long-term independence.

A Safe Home-Base for Justice-Involved Veteran (JIV) Reentry

The VIC’s reentry program centers on providing program-based transitional housing paired with consistent, practical support. We do not handle court-side advocacy or legal representation—organizations like the VA medical team and Veteran Treatment Court specialists handle those court logistics.

Instead, we help provide the daily foundation.

We offer eligible Justice-Involved Veterans a clean, stable, and supportive place to live while they complete court obligations, meet probation requirements, and work toward personal independence. Haircuts, counseling, fellowship, a food pantry, and more -- it's all here for those who want to rebuild their lives in a new, more positive direction.

Program Participation Is an Earned Opportunity

Participation in the VIC Veterans Transition and Reentry Program is a voluntary, earned opportunity built on mutual accountability. The VIC is a private non-profit organization, not a correctional facility or court entity, and we are not required to accept or retain any individual who fails to meet our program criteria.

To remain in good standing and maintain program housing, participating veterans are expected to:

  • Follow all VIC housing rules and respect the community environment.

  • Stay actively engaged with their assigned VIC case manager.

  • Fulfill all court, probation, or parole requirements.

  • Proactively address personal goals—including health, employment, and life skills—that support long-term stability.

Yes, you can still apply even if you don't have your DD214 or ID showing your veteran status

What You Receive in Return

In exchange for your active participation, compliance, and commitment to your goals, the VIC provides:

  • Safe, Supportive Transitional Housing: A secure home environment where you can focus on your next steps.

  • Ongoing Case Management: One-on-one guidance to help you navigate daily objectives, connect with resources, and plan for permanent housing.

  • A Pathway to Permanent Independence: Coordinated support aimed at breaking the cycle of legal involvement and setting you up for sustained housing stability.

Baseline Eligibility for the JIV Reentry Housing Program

To qualify for placement in our Veterans Transition and Reentry Program, applicants must generally meet the following requirements:

  • Military Service: A Veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces (Active, Reserve, National Guard) or an un-remarried surviving spouse. (Certain programs may require active-duty service to be eligible.)

  • Discharge Status: Eligibility varies by program and may depend upon the character of discharge. All discharge types are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Residency & Goal Focus: Must live in or be relocating to New Mexico and be actively seeking to improve your life.

  • Documentation: YES, you can still apply even if you do not currently have your Veteran ID or DD214 in your possession. Our intake team can assist with verification.
