Meet Milton, a Navy Veteran
Milton served in the U.S. Navy during the 1990’s, and loved working as a caretaker for the elderly. Unfortunately, he lost his job when he was laid off and ran out of unemployment benefits, and found himself homeless unable to pay for his apartment or food. Milton was aware of the VIC housing programs since he had received assistance a few years back. He admitted pride kept him from seeking out assistance before his eviction notification. He enrolled in the VIC's Transitional Housing program where he flourished as a volunteer, and worked at the VIC Thrift Shop. Milton was highly dedicated about not leaving his post unattended, something many Veterans still epitomize after service. After a month, a local employer contacted the VIC looking to hire Veterans. VIC staff helped Milton schedule an interview, and he was hired on the spot! Through this employer, Milton also received a few perks related to his new job including paid rent and utilities, and has successfully worked for the same property management company since he left our Transitional Housing program. Milton recently stopped by to meet our new Housing Specialist, Sidney, and mentioned how grateful he is to everyone at the VIC that helped him in his time of need and loves helping out Veterans who are looking for a new place to call home.
