Meet Alice, Army Veteran
Alice served in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard during the 1980’s. After leaving the military, Alice was in the medical field working as a Healthcare professional when she was involved in an auto accident. Due to her injuries, she became unable to work and lost her apartment. Soon, Alice found herself homeless until she heard about the VIC’s Transitional Housing program by her VA case worker. Alice enrolled in our Transitional Housing program and began to work with her VIC Case Manager, and together they developed an individualized service plan that included filing for VA Disability and Social Security. Alice expressed interest in returning to work as a Healthcare professional, and was determined to get her life back on track. While enrolled in our Transitional Housing program, Alice was referred to the VIC's Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, where she developed a housing stability plan that helped her become independent.
Although, the VIC didn’t help Alice locate permanent housing (she received help through a local community service provider), our SSVF program did pay for her state licensure fee to regain her ability to be self-sufficient. Alice continues to maintain stable housing and employment since exiting our programs in 2015, and still stops by the VIC to say hello and let everyone know she’s doing alright. Recently, she stopped by to inform us that she opened up her own healthcare practice and we couldn’t be more proud of her continued success and end to homelessness.
