STAND DOWN

Stand Down noun

stan(d)-ˌdau̇n

A military term originating from times of war when exhausted combat troops were given the opportunity to return to a place of relative security to rest and recover.

Stand Downs today have become common as a means to care for and advocate for homeless veterans. They are typically one- to three-day events providing supplies and services to homeless and low income Veterans, such as food, shelter, clothing, health screenings, benefits counseling.  Veterans can also receive referrals to other assistance such as health care, housing solutions, employment, substance use treatment and mental health counseling available from the numerous community partners.

Stand Downs are collaborative events, coordinated between local VA Medical Centers, other government agencies and community-based homeless service providers that focus on providing and offering services and support each year to our nation's Heroes regardless of their barriers.

The VIC has championed the Stand Down program and has helped to launch the effort in five different New Mexico communities, empowering other community partners to make the event unique to their communities and needs.

Please see the list below for more information on annual Stand Down events scheduled throughout our state.
